Looking after the welfare of others has always been a part of Debra Iuvale’s work. As a contract nurse, she traveled beyond the walls of the hospital to help fill the need for licensed practical nurses at outlying medical facilities. As she began to feel burnout, Iuvale looked to trucking as a new career where she could capitalize on her love of traveling while still making good money.
“USA showed me how much they care about their drivers.”
Debra Iuvale — USA Truck Driver Trainer
“I had always wanted to see the country and I was used to being on the road a lot,” states this mother of two. “So now that my kids were grown, I decided to get my CDL. My original plan was to go on the road for a year, then go get a local driving job close to home. As things worked out, I found out that I really loved it out here! This job and this company were both good for me, so I stayed.”
That was 8 years ago. Today, Iuvale still works with USA Truck, but now she serves as a trainer, helping other drivers get their careers off to a successful start. “If I can make one driver safer going down the road, then I’m happy,” she says. “I like working with new drivers and showing them how to avoid the common mistakes. Iuvale encourages women who are considering becoming drivers to not let fear stop them. “Women can do this just like men and it’s one of the few jobs you get paid exactly the same. I love having my freedom and not being confined in one building all day. I’ve been to all 48 states—marked them off as I did them.”
Once, she had to take a year off when her mother was very sick and she says she realized then just how much she loves her job. “I didn’t like being back in an office at all. And I while I was gone, my fleet manager from USA Truck would call to check on me even though I wasn’t even driving for them! Most people would forget about you, but USA showed me how much they care about their drivers,” she says.
I’ve really enjoyed working with USA Truck,” she says. “The people are really friendly, I get plenty of miles and the pay is great. I don’t live paycheck to paycheck anymore. I don’t have to.”
